Melita’s on Galvin
Overlooking the impressive confluence of the North Esk, South Esk and the River Tamar, this beautiful home was once a beloved community convenience store. Keeping the love and upgrading the amenities our goal is to give guests a little slice of home right in the middle of Launceston.
Built in 1906 and named in honour of our Mother, Melita’s on Galvin gives guests the feeling of coming home, while being abroad. For the length of your stay, our home is your home.
Our home
Melita’s on Galvin is named in honour of Panorea Melita, who arrived in Australia from Varda, Greece, in 1959. She established her family home on Galvin Street in the early 1970s and resided there until her passing in 2012. Her original travel trunk and other personal belongings continue to furnish the house, serving as a testament to her journey. Panorea Melita began her career at Launceston General Hospital and is remembered for her adventurous and courageous spirit, exemplified by her solo travels.

Acknowledgement of Country
Welcome to Launceston – Launnie for short. The meeting place of three waterways, our beautiful valley has been a cultural hub and gastronomic centre for more than two thousand generations.
We acknowledge and pay respects to the traditional owners of lutruwita (Tasmania), the palawa/pakana people. We acknowledge the Punnilerpanner tribe of this Northern Country, and in doing so, we celebrate one of the world’s oldest continuous cultures.
This vibrant cultural and gastronomic hub is home to a tight-knit and diverse community of winemakers, artists, distillers, designers, growers and nature lovers from around the world.
